A SECURITY OPERATION
SECURITY SUPPORT FOR CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROTEST
A mass environmentally focussed civil disobedience protest was planned to impact on a number of Australia’s largest critical infrastructure sites. The various issue motivated groups involved had a history of direct action aimed at disrupting operations against numerous power producers and their electricity distribution networks, including the use of violence. One of Australia’s key distributors of electricity and gas engaged HATAMOTO to support the planning and preparation for, response to and recovery from the protest event.
HATAMOTO undertook a security risk assessment and developed a subsequent risk treatment plan in preparation for the protest. The risk treatment plan was then implemented across the response phase of the protest event. Debriefing of all stakeholders was a key element of the recovery phase. HATAMOTO’s Risk Managers successfully liaised with the client’s Executive, senior Police and both internal and external stakeholders during all phases of the operation.
Throughout the duration of the protest the client’s staff, contractors and property remained secure and their public reputation was positively maintained. Through effective management of the security operation, the human rights of all activists were observed and respected including their right to protest.
